3.6. How to link steps together

There are multiple levels where you can link and change a step status. It can be done at a step level, at an option level (choice made by the user), regarding a variable or at all levels combined. These levels are essential to match the needs of your scenario and their utilisation will depend on the path you want to create (linear path, complex path…)

How to link steps at a step level:

To link one step to another step, go on the ‘ACTIVATION’ menu. This is the place where you will be able to create incoming and/or outgoing links as well as implementing conditions.

In this section, you have the ability to impact the activation of the step you are working on:

  • The ‘steps that enable auto-activation’ option allows you to choose one or multiple step statuses, one or multiple variable equations or simply the round progress to make the step you are working on active. You can combine multiple options.
  • The ‘steps that authorize activation’ option allows you to choose one or multiple steps status to authorize the step you are working on to become active. You can combine multiple options. This is only an authorization, which means that the step needs another activation (via another step activation, a choice, a variable…) at a certain point of the round to be displayed.

You have also the ability to impact the activation of one or multiple other steps:

  • The ‘change step status’ option allows you to choose one or multiple steps and to select the status you want to apply to them once the current step is passed. This is the standard way to activate steps in a linear or in a non linear simulation. See the step status available here (link to 3.4)

Note that you can also link two steps together directly on the scenario area by clicking on the bubbles below a step and drag & dropping them on another step. The blue bullet allows to list another step while the green bullet allows to list and display immediately another step. This system is easy but limited as you can only change a step status and you cannot put any conditions directly from here. If you want to do so, you will have to enter the ‘ACTIVATION’ menu to add a condition on the link you just created.

How to link steps at an option level (for action steps):

To create a link to another step regarding an option chosen by the user, go in the ‘OPTIONS’ menu and select the option you want in order to activate a new step. One option can activate multiple steps. Of course each option can activate different steps.
Once you are in an option, click on the ‘add button’ in the Change step status option. Select and change a step status to link this option to another step. You can also add condition to this link. Click here to see how to use conditions (link to conditions paragraph)

Note: For the decision multiple step you can activate other steps from the ‘OPTIONS’ menu but also from the ‘ITEMS’ menu. The first solution allows you to activate steps regarding a combination of answers when the second solution allows you to activate steps regarding a user choice without having to fill every combination possible in the options menu.
And thanks to the live preview, you can see directly the results on our example.
